In his keynote talk, Dr Gerald Taylor Aiken argued for an orientation-based approach to study the role of community in sustainability transitions, such as the Transition Towns Network. He suggested that this particular approach draws not on the metaphor of the map but of the compass, avoiding the phenomenon of “death by objectification”, often linked to dominant scholarly work on these initiatives. According to Taylor Aiken, the orientation approach has two main benefits: it pays attention to groups according to their own perspectives; it allows insight into the numinous, i.e., the “dark social matter” that is often absent from dominant approaches.

Taylor Aiken sugeriu que esta abordagem em particular não está baseada na metáfora do mapa mas sim do compasso, evitando o fenómeno da “morte por objetificação”, frequentemente associado ao trabalho académico sobre estas iniciativas.
